Title: Winning Love Chapter 5 Author: Alicia Blade E-mail: Kammi22@sprintmail.com Hey Minna-chan! How y'all doin? Okay, first, I'd like to say some Things about this chapter. It will be the LAST chapter. THANK GOODNESS! Actually, I had a ton of fun writing this, and want to thank all you Wonderful people who e-mailed me you comments and support. I have a List of thank-yous at the end. Please read it. Okay, I know that everything in the story so far has been from Darien's Point of view. This chapter will be different. Parts of it will be in Third person (author's POV). This is because I'm putting in some scenes Where Darien isn't present, which would make it really hard for him to Give his perspective, now wouldn't it? Any time I am speaking in first Person, it is Darien. If this totally confuses you, SORRY! Please e-mail me on what you think. That way, if you hate it, I'll make sure not to do it in any future stories. Kay, got that? Hope so. Well- here goes! Chapter 5: Tuxedo Mask to the Rescue "Let's go this way!" "No! This way is prettier!" "But this path goes to the lake!" "Well I wanna go look at the Japanese Gardens!" "I thought we were gonna go have a picnic at the cherry trees!" "Yeah! Food! Let's go!" I laughed. It was amazing how these girls could be best friends and still argue so much! Since the other day at the beach, I had been sort of 'accepted' into Serena's group of friends. And so, we were all at the park for a relaxing afternoon stroll. Yeah right! Thank goodness it wasn't just me and a bunch of giggling girls. There was also Chad, Ken, and Greg. I had learned a lot about them today, deciding to spend all of my conversations with them instead of Raye, Lita, or Amy. Serena, of course, I would talk to any chance I got. But here's what I have learned about my new companions. Chad lives in Raye's grandpa's temple. He was found sleeping on their outdoor steps one evening and Mr. Hino decided to take him in and let him earn his keep working there. He used to want to be a rock musician, but since he met Raye, he's been seriously contemplating staying with her and helping run the temple when he grows up. Though he hadn't told Raye yet. He's even trying to get rolled into a religious course at the Tokyo University. (AN: I have no idea if this exists.) Ken is your typical, friendly, shy type of guy. Him and Lita have been friends since they were kids. Ken mostly likes rainy days. He says they help him clear his mind. I think I agree with him. Greg was one of the rainbow crystal carriers that the Sailor Scouts saved only a few days ago. I hadn't recognized him at the ball- I was sort of preoccupied, but now I remember clearly. I didn't really stay around long enough at the battle to pick up any info on him, but I remember him saying something to Sailor Mercury about being psychic. Other than that, he's really smart, even got a better score on a test exam than Amy! He's also very shy and seems to have trouble talking to any girls... except Amy. We had come to a fork in the dirt pathway of the park. After a lot of arguing, fighting, and scrutinizing, we decided to split into groups and everyone could go where they wanted. And so, Raye and Chad headed off to the Japanese style gardens, Amy and Greg went off to the lake, and Lita and Ken disappeared off toward the cherry trees. Serena and I decided to take a walk through the rose garden. At the Japanese gardens......... Raye and Chad walked hand in hand over the brick pathway. "So how's the music coming along Chad?" "Ah, pretty good Raye. I wrote a song yesterday. Do you wanna hear it?" "Oh, please no!" "oh... okay..." "I'm sorry, Chad... I'm just not... really interested in that type of music. Not really my thing, ya know?" "Gotcha Raye. I actually... don't know if I'm gonna keep up with it after all." "What?! But... it's like... your dream!" "No, it was my dream. I actually think... I, like, wanna stay at the temple... with you and Gramps." "Chad are you an idiot!? You can't give up on something like that! Of all the stupid thing I've heard..." "I don't want to leave you, Raye..." "Chad, me and Grandpa can take care of ourselves! You don't have to give up on you dreams for us!" Chad grabbed her wrists, turning her to face him. "I know, Raye. But... I want to be with you. I don't want to live without you. You're all I've ever wanted." He kissed her briefly. Raye could feel her lips tingle and knees weaken. Funny... Darien had never made her feel that way... could this be... love? "Besides, Raye, I don't think I could have made it as a musician anyways. You gotta admit, I'm not the most... talented musician in the world." Raye laughed. Chad kissed her again, much more passionately this time. When he pulled away, Raye stared dazedly into his deep brown eyes, so full of honesty and compassion, and felt her heart melt. "I would love to have you stay with us." She stood on her toes for another kiss. Then... an ear-shattering scream was heard in the distance. Meanwhile at the lake......... "Isn't the lake gorgeous at this time of year?" asked Greg. "Oh, yes. It's beautiful," answered Amy. "I love water." "Me too." Amy slipped off her sandals and dipped a foot into the cold water. Greg rolled up his jeans and did the same. "It's cold." "Good observation, Ms. Mizuno," laughed Greg, playfully splashing water onto Amy's legs. "Hey!" Amy shyly joined in the fight. (AN imagine Amy doing this!) Soon, water was flying between the two, soaking them beneath their skin. Amy's laughing could be heard all around the lake. Just as she was about to make a great wave toward him, he caught her arm... in self-defense of course. "Hey, never thought you'd be so good at this!" he choked out between laughs as he attempted to catch hold of his breath. "Neither did I!" said Amy, her eyes brimming with laughter and excitement. They stood in the water for a long time, staring at each other. Their hair dripped fresh water down their faces and their wet clothes clinging carelessly to their bodies. Soon, the laughter fell into a still silence where only the others' eyes existed. Greg smiled lightly. "I'm glad we came to the park today." "Me too," she whispered back. An unexpected shiver ran down her spine, sending Goosebumps over her skin. "You must be freezing!" Greg stepped out of the lake and pulled her out behind him. "I'd give you my jacket, but it's sorta wet." "I'm fine. Thank you." They walked down the shore for awhile in happy silence. After a while, they found themselves on the end of a dock. "Amy... I was thinking..." "Yes, Greg?" "Well..." he looked into her curious and ever innocent blue eyes. "if maybe you'd like to go... to the amusement park sometime with me..." Amy stood quietly for a minute, drinking in his question. Then a bright smile crossed her face as she realized he was asking her on... a date! This wonderful, sweet, handsome, caring guy was asking HER out! "Oh Greg! I'd love to!" "You would?" "Of course!" Greg smiled and laced his fingers through hers. They turned to watch the sun glitter over the smooth crystal waves for a moment... but then a piercing scream in the distance shattered the peace. In the meantime at the cherry trees... "How's your rice?" asked Lita, taking a bite of her tofu bean dish. "Delicious! You were always the best cook, Lita!" She smiled at him gratefully and took a sip of her homemade cranberry tea. "When you start your own restaurant, you're going to be flooded with customers! Probably be able to retire after a few years!" "Thank you, Ken! But I really don't think I'm that good a cook." "You've gotta be kidding, Leets! You make the best food in Tokyo! Much better than that McDonald's place, and look at how much money they're raking in!" "Leets? Ken, after 8 years of being best friends, you still call me that stupid nick name!" "Well, you'll always be my little Leets. You know that." She smiled at him caringly. "Yeah, well your little Leets can still beat you up!" "But you wouldn't!" he pointed out teasingly. She smiled mischievously and finished the last drink of her juice. "Oh I wouldn't, would I?" Giving just enough time for Ken to become scared, she lunged at him, easily pinning him to the ground. "Not fair!" he screamed, struggling to free himself. "You should know better than to mess with lightning, boy!" "What's that supposed to mean?" But he didn't give time to answer. Instead, he flipped her onto her own back and pressed her shoulders into the grass. "Say uncle!" "Never!" and with that, she lifted her neck and pressed her lips onto his. He weakened and within a split second was on the ground again. Then, everything stopped. The laughing, the smiles, the joking. Lita looked down on her victim, her best friend since grade school. The person who had been there whenever she needed him. Who would lend his shoulder for her to cry on and never ask for anything in return. Ken looked up into two familiar green eyes. He would give so much to see a smile in those eyes. This was the girl he could always talk to. The one person who understood him. Who he could always count on. For the first time in their relationship, the best friends knew that their friendship was more than just that. They needed each other. Lita and Ken's lips met half way. And all the compassion, love, and forever friendship sent sparks between the two. However, they're moment in heaven was cut short by a shrill scream. At the rose gardens... "Oooohh!!! I love roses! They are so beautiful! Doncha think?" "Definitely," but I wasn't looking at the roses. My eyes were glued to the shining girl next to me as she lightly fingered the petals of nearly every flower in that garden. Her eyes would linger on one and then another would catch her eye and she would flitter over to it and praise every petal and leaf before moving on once more. Slyly, I created a red rose- this one NOT steal-tipped- and pulled it out from behind my back, then placed it in front of her small nose. She stopped surprised, but then her eyes lit up and she looked up at me joyfully. "You liked it when Tuxedo Mask did it. Does it get the same effect with me?" She giggled merrily and cautiously took it from my hand, her fingers lightly brushing against my palm. "Hey! Where are the thorns?" "There aren't any. Not all roses have thorns. Just most of them." "Oh. You really know a lot about these don't you?" "They're beautiful flowers. Almost as beautiful as you." I gave her a quick kiss on the cheek and began walking down the pathway once more. She caught up to me, still holding the rose with a fascinated gaze. I was becoming much more comfortable around Serena. A few times I had even ventured to hold her hand. She never pulled away, and so I never stopped. Today I had made up my mind to tell her how I felt. But each time I opened my mouth, I would look at her dazzling beauty and become speechless. Why would she want me? I couldn't do anything for her. Not really. And yet, watching her running her fingers over the stem and petals of my rose as if it would break, and lightly grazing it over her nose to smell it's fresh spring scent, made me realize that she WAS happy I was there with her. Not to mention how happy it made ME that I was there with her. She looked up at me to catch my stare, and smiled. I smiled back and returned my eyes to the brick path. "Darien?" she whispered, as if afraid of someone overhearing. "Yeah?" "I... well... I mean... what happened to you?" I smiled and chuckled softly. "What do you mean, Meatball Head?" She actually smiled back at me at the mention of her nickname. I had noticed her do that a lot lately. It made me wonder how much she actually did hate it when I called her that. "A week ago, you were a major jerk. You teased me and made fun of me and I could have sworn your whole purpose in life was to make me miserable. And then, last Wednesday, you bought me a sundae. And after that, you gave me a standing ovation at the talent show, invited me to a ball, took me out to brunch, and even came with my family down to the beach. And now you're walking with me at the park and I feel like I couldn't possibly have better company. So... what happened?" I smiled at her and took a deep breath. "Well, I just... I realized that I don't want to be your enemy. I guess. I don't want you to hate me and think I'm the scum of the Earth and all that, ya know?" She looked up at me and I thought I could see a deep caring in her blue eyes. "I never hated you Darien." Then she quickly looked away at the ground and began twirling the rose stem between her fingers. "I... I need to tell you something...though..." "What's that?" She bit her lip and returned her eyes to mine. Then she looked around. The rose garden had quite a few couples strolling through it. She took my wrist and began dragging me down another pathway. Soon, I saw where she was headed. A gardener's shed. When we reached the door, she swung it open and I walked inside, my mind reeling. The shed was mostly empty other then a few rakes, shovels, and a coiled up hose in the corner. A small dirty window on the north wall and the small cracks in the weathered boards were the only sources of light. "Serena? What do you need to tell me? You know you can tell me anything, right?" She nodded her head. Tilting her chin up so I could look into her sea blue eyes, I saw confusion and nervousness. Two emotions that don't fit her well. Well, maybe confusion. "I..." she started, still looking into my eyes. She looked as if she was searching for something. "I... want to tell you... how I feel." "Wh... what do you mean?" "First, you have to promise me you won't laugh at me." "I wouldn't." "And... that you won't look at me as some stupid teenager either." "Serena, you're not stupid." "And also... you have to promise... that you won't... you won't hate me." This took me by surprise. Me? Hate Serena? Not in a million years. I moved my face a tiny bit closer to hers. "I could never hate you. Not if I tried." She took deep breath and nodded. "Then... I... I think... well, I know... that I... I..." Before she could finish her sentence, a tantalizing scream was heard not far outside. Serena jumped back. I ran to the door and opened it a crack to peer out. A youma stood at the center of the rose garden. It looked like a slug with a turnip shaped head. Out of two horns poking out from it's scull, long vines were shooting out and wrapping around the people who tried to run away. "Oh no!" gasped Serena, standing beside me. "Um... Darien... uh... why don't you stay here, and I'll go get us some help." "Serena are you insane? No! You stay! I'm gonna go... call the police." "The police?!" she screamed while attempting to keep her voice down. "This is no job for the police! We need Sailor Moon!" "Well unless you are her good friend or something, I suggest you stay here!" I pushed her back to the center of the shed. Come on Serena! Do you always have to be so stubborn? They need Tuxedo Mask! I turned to leave but she dashed in front of me, blocking my path. "No, Darien! I won't let you go out there! I'm smaller! I can duck behind bushes a lot easier! You stay here and I'll go get some help, okay?" Her eyes were pleading and almost brimming with tears. "Darien, promise me you won't go out there. PROMISE ME!" I stared at her. NO! Serena you can't do this to me! Please don't make me promise. PLEASE don't make me promise! "I promise," I whispered. I couldn't say no to her. I simply couldn't. "Good." And she was gone. I stared for a second and then the full stupidity of what I had just done hit me like a tornado. She's gonna get killed! I'm gonna lose my Serena! Not if I have anything to say about it! I transformed into Tuxedo Mask and ran out the door. I began leaping through some nearby trees, going unnoticed by all onlookers. Finally, I stopped and took a good glance at what was happening. People lay strewn across the pathways and grass unconscious. I noticed that Sailor Mercury, Sailor Mars, and Sailor Jupiter were already throwing attacks at the slug-monster. Where is Serena? And Sailor Moon? Then I saw Meatball Head, standing a few yards from the now deserted shed. Without warning, she threw her hand into the air and looked about to declare something, when the monster threw a bunch of large knives, which strangely resembled carrots, at the shed just behind her. It disintegrated instantly. Serena's hand dropped to it's side and her mouth hung open as she stared at the pile of rubble. Collapsing to her knees, I heard her scream agonizingly. But then I noticed the monster preparing another attack for the girl. Just as the deadly vegetables were soaring towards her, I jumped from my perch and flew to her side. Sweeping her into my arms, I carried her swiftly to another area of the park. She cried into my shoulder the whole time. When I finally set her down, she dropped to the grass and buried her head in her palms. Her body shook with sobs. I placed my arms around her but she pulled away from me. "Go away. Leave me alone." "What's wrong? Why are you crying? The sailor scouts will take care of that monster. And everything will be okay. You'll see." "NO! No, everything will not be okay! Nothing's okay!" "What is it? What happened?" "He's gone. That monster killed him. He's gone..." she whispered. "I saw it. He... he's gone. He was in the shed and... that ugly monster! He killed him! Darien..." Darien! Of course! Why hadn't I thought of that? She thought I was in the shed! Oh Meatball Head... "I..." "He left me. He left me. And now that I finally realize what he's really like. That I actually get to know him. And he LEAVES me! He can't do this! He can't do this to me. I need him. Darien, come back..." "I'm sure he's fine..." "NO HE'S NOT!" She jumped to her feet, tears rolling down both cheeks. "Don't you get it? He's gone! He swore to me that he would stay in the shed. HE PROMISED!" Then her eyes became wide and she gasped. "Oh no! I... I killed him. I killed him... No! Darien..." She once again collapsed to her knees. I rushed forward to put my arm around her. "You don't understand. I... I loved him." WHAT? What had she just said?! "I loved him. I LOVE him. And I... I never got to tell him how I felt. And I... and he's never gonna know. He left me. Darien left me. I love him. I love... and he's never going to know. Never..." I barely forced a smile down. Lifting her head to look at me, I could no longer keep away the smile begging to come out. "Trust me. He knows how you feel." "How... how do you know?" "Because... you just told him." I leaned forward and tenderly placed a butterfly kiss on her pink lips. She gasped and pulled back. "Tu... Tuxedo Mask?" I shook my head back and forth with a sly grin then pulled off the hat and mask. She covered her mouth with her hands and her eyes became round and wide as the tears stopped. "DARIEN!" She lunged forward, knocking me to the ground. Her arms surrounded my neck and her fingers clutched at my cape. Once again, tears came rushing down her cheeks into my jacket. This time, though, they were tears of happiness. I hugged her back with equal enthusiasm. She held onto me as if she were afraid if her grasp loosened, I would disappear. I held onto her out of pure joy for what she had said. For what she had told me. She loved me. After how much time of her longing for Tuxedo Mask, she chose ME! I kissed the top of her head, feeling her hair tumbling around my arms. For what seemed like hours, she slowly pulled back to look at me. I detransformed under her gaze, wanting her to see Darien Chiba and not some super hero. She smiled and her eyes swept over me. I could tell she was memorizing me. Storing my every feature to memory. Something I had done many times to her. "I... I thought..." "You were wrong." "But... the shed... and you..." "I broke my promise." "I'm glad." She smiled and I sat up next to her. Then a look of realization clouded her joyful features. "Omigosh!" "What?" "You... you let me say all those things! You... you heard me... and... oh you must think I'm just a stupid girl with a stupid crush! And now you hate me and I ruined our friendship and... oh no!" I stood and pulled her to her feet. Placing a hand on each side of her small face, I forced her to look up at me. "Serena. I could never hate you." I paused. "I love you too much." Lowering my face to hers, I caught her in a deep, passionate kiss. She was surprised at first but then returned the kiss with the same amount of love. Slowly, I moved my hands to her back and held her next to me as her fingers reached to the back of my neck and stroked my hair. All thought was lost as I fell into a heaven I have been dreaming about before I even realized what I felt towards this wonderful, beautiful, talented, funny, kind, sweet, and loving girl. This girl who loves me. Reluctantly, I pulled away allowing each of us to grasp a breath. Her head fell against my chest and I could feel her sigh in happiness. We stood like that for a few moments. "Darien?" "Yeah?" The next thing she said brought every dream, every fantasy I have had before I even met this angel, showering down on me. "I love you." I kissed the top of her head and held her tighter. "And I love you, my Meatball Head." "SERENA!" We turned to see an extremely angry Raye stalking toward us. "We have been looking everywhere for you! Ya know, you could have helped us back there a little!" Then her eyes fell on me. "Oh, I mean, um... hey! I thought you were with Tuxedo Mask!" "Well, I uh... was. Um... sorta still am..." I looked at her sternly. Serena! You can't tell anyone! She looked at me understandingly and gave me a quick wink telling me she knew what she was doing. I decided to trust her on this. Looking back at Raye, I saw that Amy and Lita were with her as well. "What on Earth do you mean you still ARE?!" Serena cleared her throat. "Um, Darien, I want you to meet my friends. Sailor Mars, Sailor Mercury, and Sailor Jupiter." They all gasped and stared at her wide-eyed. "Serena! What the hell do you think you're doing?" asked Raye. Serena ignored her. "Guys, Darien is Tuxedo Mask." We stared at each other for a long while in utter silence. Then I realized... if they were the Sailor Scouts... naw! It couldn't be! But then, where was... "Hey! Where's Sailor Moon?" Serena cleared her throat and I turned to her in shock. She smiled shyly and gave a small wave. "Hi." "Serena?" I choked out. She nodded. I gawked at her until a blush covered her face and she began to giggle at my dumbfounded expression. Finally, she spoke, "Well, I never would have guessed you to be Tuxedo Mask either! I mean, my impossible crush turns out to be my love! What are the chances of that!" She laughed and I smiled at her, then wrapped my arms around her once more and kissed her full on the lips, completely forgetting about our little audience. She kissed me back. Raye, Amy, and Lita sighed with joy and I could tell they were all watching with dreamy glazed over eyes. But, it didn't matter. Now, I knew why I always felt so close to Sailor Moon. So protective. Because I love her. And no one is ever going to hurt MY meatball head. As we kissed, I vowed to never, EVER let any one hurt her. They'd have to kill me first. And, as we kissed, I realized something else as well. This was happiness. This was what I had been waiting for. This was love. As we kissed, I was happy. The next day... I strolled down the sidewalk happily. I hadn't stopped smiling since we returned from the park. Last night I had dreamed of my princess, but this time when I woke up, I remembered her face perfectly. It was Serena. I had decided not to tell her about it, in case my dreams had been affected by my feelings for her and she wasn't really the princess. But those doubts were very small in my mind. I believed she was my princess. I believed it with all my heart. As I turned the corner of the street, I saw Serena walk cheerfully into Crown Center Arcade. An even bigger smile dawned on my face and I followed her in. When I got inside, she was talking to Andrew. "Hey Andrew! Have you seen Darien?" He looked at her surprised. "You... WANT to talk to Darien?" I chuckled. "Hey Meatball Head." She turned and I saw her face light up like a Christmas tree. That was all I saw before she launched into me full speed. Nearly knocking me to the ground. I laughed harder and wrapped my arms around her. "Miss me?" She beamed up at me and I lowered my face toward hers. After the kiss, I looked up at Andrew to see him with the most flabbergasted expression I have ever seen. His jaw hung open and his eyes stared at us disbelieving. I laughed again. "Hey dude. Ya wanna join us for lunch?" "Ser... Serena was the one? You've gotta be kidding!" "I was the one what?" "Let's see," I answered, copying Andrew, "the one who has me completely ga-ga. The one I can't seem to keep my mind off of for more than 30 seconds. You mean that one? Yup, Serena's her." Serena sighed happily and looked up at me with glazed eyes. "You are so sweet." I smiled down at her and kissed her once more, then pulled another rose from behind my back. "I do believe you left your rose in the shed the other day." She took it happily and pecked me on the cheek. "Thank you." "So how about that lunch?" I asked turning to Andrew who looked as if he were in shock. "I... uh... I... Serena?" Serena and I both laughed. "Yes. Serena was the girl who actually made the great Darien fall in love. Surprising, huh?" He just nodded. "Well, I think you need a little time to collect your thoughts. See ya around, Andrew." "Bye!" Serena waved cheerfully as we began heading toward the automatic doors. He instinctively waved back, his jaw still agape. My arm found its way around Serena's waste and we left the arcade. When we were outside, I kissed her tenderly on the lips and we walked off into the sunset. Or... as much as we could at one o'clock in the afternoon. And for the first time in my 19 years, I was completely, totally, and utterly happy. I had love. I had Serena. I had won her love.
